Aesthetics

For this assignment I decided to explore the use of aesthetics by taking many different pictures of these fake silk flowers I own. This week we read a lot about working the shot and making the same subject look very different using various techniques so that is what I tried to accomplish. I took all of these pictures on my iPhone X which has a pretty good quality camera.

Symmetry
The first technique I decided to focus on was symmetry. I played with the flowers and the bow on them in order to create symmetry. I bent to bow so it could look as similar as possible on both sides. I also tried to get a close up of the image to just focus on the subject. The other aesthetically pleasing part of the photograph is the horizon line between the desk and the wall, I tried to make this as straight as possible.

Details
The next aspect I wanted to focus on was detail. I got a different point of view of the subject by placing my phone camera directly above the subject, resulting in a bird's eye view. I really like how this picture came out as you can see the detail of the different petals of the flowers in the silk bouquet.

Point of View
After playing with the point of view in the previous photograph I was inspired to continue exploring that aspect. I placed my phone below and also on a slant. I think this is a very interesting image as it is not a view you would normally get of the flowers. I really like how this shot turned out and I could imagine it being on a site that was trying to sell the flowers.

Rule of Thirds
For the next shot I wanted to try out another basic technique, which was rule of thirds. I also tried to incorporate negative space for this shot, with the huge blank white space taking up most of the photograph. Overall, I like the simplicity of this picture.

Framing
For the last shot I wanted to challenge myself and try to frame the subject. I used a basket and played around with that for a few shots. At the beginning I had the basket upright but after working the shot a little more I liked how the basket looked as a slanted frame. I also like how the basket created a shadow so it looks like the flowers are floating above the bow.

Overall, for my first attempt trying to focus on aesthetics, I enjoyed taking the photos and having to think a little more about each one. I like how most of my pictures came out and I think I captured the flowers in many different ways, therefore, successfully working the shot.
